Last month, I got to be part of a VERY special engagement session. My sister’s best friend, Ashlee, contacted me earlier this year about doing a shoot with her and her sweetie pie, Jon, while I was home in Michigan. Ashlee and Jon had already started planning their wedding, but there were still a few things to fall into place – namely, an official proposal with a ring and Jon on one knee and all that. So my sister, Jon and I came up with a plan for Jon to surprise Ash during the shoot. Jon carved a hole in a special journal he’d bought for Ashlee, and we tucked the ring inside. Once we got settled in the apple orchard where Ashlee had played as a kid, I had them sit on a blanket and pretend to be reading the book. Ashlee was so surprised to find a sparkly, just-for-her ring inside (she’d even gone as far as wearing a ring she already owned so there would be one on her finger in the shoot). Then Jon did his very sweet proposing and voila!
Ashlee and Jon, I am so thrilled for you two! Can’t wait to hear all about your wedding in Hawaii!
Leah’s blog was the very first blog I started reading, and the one I’ve stuck with the longest. I’ve cheered her on as she and Simon started dating, bought their first home together and welcomed their incredibly cute little boy. So when she emailed me earlier this year asking if April and I were available to photograph her wedding to Simon, the answer was a huge “Yes, ma’am!”
Their wedding at the Berkeley Hillside Club last weekend was a perfect reflection of their little family: Colorful, loving and full of laughter. Although I know Leah worked tirelessly to pull the wedding together in just a few months, on the day of, the results seemed effortlessly adorable and relaxed, like a (very pretty) Sunday picnic.

Leah and Simon, it was an honor being part of your making-it-even-more-official day!
Paramount Ranch is a popular place for engagement photos, but Jenn and Victor were actually the first couple we’ve shot there. They were wonderfully good sports about climbing near potential spider holes (eek!) to get some great images. We know their Smog Shoppe wedding this September is going to be amazing!
